Top five massage-therapy techniques that will restore your body and mind

Among the many types massage-therapy techniques, there are five that each address and resolve specific physical issues and mental stress. The most common massage-therapy technique is called Swedish or Classical Massage, which targets your soft tissues extremely well.  Then, there are four additional massage techniques that will restore your body and mind.

Regardless of the massage technique you choose, you’ll receive amazing results when you use a great massage therapist.

Swedish Massage

The most common type of massage is Swedish Massage therapy.  It involves soft, long, kneading strokes throughout your body.  Also, it includes light, rhythmic, tapping strokes, on your top layers of your muscles.  These tapping strokes combine with regular joint movement throughout your treatment.

By relieving muscle tension, the Swedish Massage technique is both will relax and energize your body.  And it may even help after an injury based on your doctor’s approval, of course.

A Swedish fencing instructor named Per Henrik Ling invented Swedish Massage back in the 1830s.  When he experienced an elbow injury, he reportedly cured himself using tapping strokes around the affected area.  After perfecting the technique, he called it “Swedish Massage.”

Deep Tissue Massage

Being the best massage technique for certain painful or stiff “trouble spots” throughout your body, Deep Tissue Massage does exactly what the name suggests.  Your massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues that are deep under your skin.

Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, Deep Tissue Massage is therapeutic.  As such, it relieves chronic patterns of tension and it helps with muscle injuries such as a back sprain.

Relaxation Massage

As the name suggests, Relaxation Massage centers on your relaxation. It focuses mainly on giving you quality time to recover from the daily stresses of everyday life.  And just like other massage techniques, the benefits you receive from a Relaxation Massage typically last several days after you receive your treatment.

Eastern Massage techniques

Eastern massage is simply a collection of massage techniques from various Asian countries.  Although they tend to be grouped together, each one is quite unique.  Examples of Eastern massage include the following:  Shiatsu (Japanese), Amma and Tuina (Chinese), Marma/Varma Adi (India), Nuad Bo Rarn (Thailand), and Lomi Lomi (Hawaii/Pacific Island).

As Eastern Massage refers to many types of massage from many Asian countries, the origins vary greatly.  A Shiatsu Massage is one of the most famous Japanese massage.  It’s often used for correcting imbalances in your body.

Originally developed from ancient Taoism healing practices, it’s also used in traditional Chinese Medicine.  During a Shiatsu massage, various amounts of pressure are applied to specific points of your body.  It has the purpose of promoting healthy energy flows and rectifying imbalances.

Shiatsu is one of several massages based on a belief.  Many eastern cultures believe that most illnesses result from unhealthy energy flows in your body.  To explain, energy flows within your body, and any imbalance will cause an illness or some type of pain.

Prenatal massage

Research shows prenatal massage therapy can help reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. Prenatal massage therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Swedish Massage.

Swedish Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.

A distinction should be made between therapeutic prenatal massage and perineal massage, the latter referring to the practice of manually stretching the tissues surrounding the birth canal to help reduce the risk of episiotomy or trauma associated with childbirth.
